As I was reading this book I was given a peek into at time of history where men did things to each other that no one can explain. The book showed me the harsh and untold truths of war and what it really means to pay the price for freedom. I really enjoyed this book tho, it was filled with suspense and action and there was never ending excitement. When reading the book, it's as if you are there for yourself. you feel nervous for the men, you wish you could help, and you celebrate victories for them and mourn for their loses. This book is also very cool because it takes you on the journey with the platoon of men. While reading I got to learn about each character's lives outside of the military and how different life was back in the day. With that I thought it was kind of cool how people with such different backgrounds can come together to form a team, and come together quick enough where they would take a bullet for one another.
Starting off, the books setting takes place on a small landing craft that that all the men are on wich will take them to the beach. It introduces all the men and how they were feeling. You can hear all the machine gun and artillery fire from the beach and you can see the look of horror on the men's faces as they hear and imagine what they are about to go through. Upon reaching the beach you can see the hatches going down and hear the begging of machine gun chatter, chewing up the men in the front of the boat. When the men that do survive make it to the beach, you watch them make it past many obstacles until they reach their targets. Throughout the rest of the book, the small platoon is assigned an important mission and are faced with many obstacles along with grievances.
As I read this book, I was shown how gruesome war really is, and how video games don't do a justice to how bad it actually was. I began to see why veterans can be emotionally unstable and how disrespecting them should be a crime. While reading I got a glimpse at what war might have looked like and looked like. After reading this book, I know that people who go to war, whether they die or not, sacrifice a whole lot.
